Favorite Books and Gadgets

This page will contain links to where you can buy the books and gadgets that I use and like.

Sausage by A.D. Livingston – This was the first book I used to learn about sausage making. Great for beginners, with a good overview of the basics of sausage making and stuffing and recipes for a wide variety of styles. You can see my initial foray into sausage making on BS Brewing here.

Charcuterie: The Craft of Salting, Smoking, and Curing – Michael Ruhlman and Brian Polcyn’s bible for homemade meats. Recipes for homemade bacon, pastrami, salami, soppressata, etc. I’ve made several sausages and my beef jerky recipe comes from this book.

Local Breads by Daniel Leader – Simply an amazing book for making authentic old-world breads. My favorites are the Parisian daily bread and Czech Christmas bread and there’s a recipe for Bavarian pretzels that’s on my to-do list.

Jam It, Pickle It, Cure It: And Other Cooking Projects by Karen Solomon – I love this book because it’s packed with such a range of simple-to-make items including cheese, jam, potato chips, pasta, even kimchee. I’ve made the graham crackers and check out The DIY Kitchen’s first entry, homemade ketchup, which is inspired by this book.

Canning by Susan and Bill Deeming – Shameless plug time, my in-laws wrote a series of cookbooks back in the 80’s including this book on canning. They pretty much canned anything you can think of, fruit, vegetables, beans, etc.  Uh-oh, I just realized there’s a recipe for ketchup in here.

KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixers – Without the Kitchen Aid stand mixer The DIY Kitchen wouldn’t work nearly as well. I use this for making butter, pizza dough, bread, and grinding meat.

Pizza Stone – We have a basic rectangular stone that I use for bread and pizza. Helps create super crisp crusts.

More to Come….
